Show the spirit by being involved

By Jim Mynard
VOLUNTEERS typify the spirit for which Australia has become known as a nation.
Casey mayor Colin Butler made this point to more than 200 people at the City of Casey citizenship awards held in the civic centre on Australia Day evening.
He said nominees for the awards and others had involved themselves in community life as part of the Australian spirit.
Cr Butler said everyone was capable of making a contribution.
“We achieve great things by doing what we can and even if small, doing it together makes a difference.”
Cr Butler said Australia Day celebrations were held all through the City of Casey and it was a day everyone celebrated and gave thanks for the opportunities that Australia continued to provide for its people.
He said Casey welcomed nearly 100 new citizens during the day and would welcome twice that number each month at citizenship ceremonies during the next year.
“These people each bring the influence of different foods, music, arts, sports, language and dress and most of all their history and stories to enrich Australian culture.
“The City of Casey acknowledges and celebrates the diverse cultures and backgrounds of its residents that make up its vibrant community.
“The unity found in Casey has not evolved simply through the recognition of new cultures now present within our community, but also in the recognition of our Aboriginal heritage.
“Our past also plays a significant role in making who we are today both as a community and as individuals.
“By our participation, and the relationships we make, we create a shared identity, and that is what makes us a community.
“I encourage each one of you to get to know your neighbour and take part in our community to make it a better place to live,” he said.
