More expensive market despite mixed quality

There were approximately 540 export and 400 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 200 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and competing in a dearer market.
Quality was mixed with secondary cattle scattered throughout the prime drafts and a sprinkling of grain assisted trade cattle on offer.
Grass finished milk vealers sold three to six cents dearer for most and more in places.
Yearling trade cattle sold five to eight cents dearer for most with the best grain assisted lots making the top prices.
Stronger demand for feeder steers pushed prices up to 14 cents dearer.
Grown steers lifted 13 cents to 15 cents while the bullocks sold five cents dearer.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold 28 cents dearer for better quality.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers gained 14 cents for a limited selection while the crossbred portion lifted nine cents.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butchers sold from 330 cents to 368 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 330 cents and 355 cents with the grain assisted calves reaching 380 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 308 cents and 355 cents with the grain assisted lots up to 370 cents. Feeder steers made from 314 cents to 360 cents.
Grown steers sold from 305 cents to 341 cents.
Bullocks made between 306 cents and 334 cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold between 305 cents and 313 cents.
