A grand win for Garfield

GARFIELD Bowls Club’s divisionsix team downed ladder leaders Warragul to win the Mid Gippsland Bowls Association western division grand final at Trafalgar last weekend.

On Saturday the divisiontwo team lost its semifinal against Morwell Club.
In division six, Garfield met Longwarry on Saturday and won the semifinal by 25 shots.
After a slightly shaky start the Garfield team led at the tea break by 25 shots and went on to hold that lead at the finish.
Scores were; Alex Mentiplay, Geoff Gaskell, Wayne Gunton and Matthew Smith defeated Gerard Mitchell’s team 31 to 11.
Bob Hope, Laurence Wright, Bill Doherty and Bill Charles defeated Peter Smethurst’s team 28 to 23.

On Sunday the grand final was played against Warragul.
Garfield got away to a flying start and both rinks were in control and at the tea break led by 23 shots.
However after the break, Warragul found something extra and threw down a real challenge to get within five shots at one stage.
Garfield went away at the finish to win by 10 shots.
Scores were: Alex Mentiplay, Geoff Gaskell, Wayne Gunton and Matthew Smith defeated Don Grogan’s team 26 to 25.
Bob Hope, Laurence Wright, Bill Doherty and Bill Charles defeated W. Boscombe’s team 31 to 22.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:DIVISION TWO SEMIFINAL RESULTS

In division two on Saturday the scores were; Steve Bassed, Gary Payne, Tom Cleary and Ray Biffin lost to S. Glossop’s team 16 to 27.
Stephen Whyte, Shane Oliver, Bob Lamport and Malcolm Shaw defeated P Jonas’ team 25 to 23.
Jim Oliver, Les Pumphrey, Hank Wouters and Frank Prins defeated J. Bannister’s team 24 to 21.
Colin Mills, Stu Robertson, Reg Mattingley and Colin Carmichael lost to R. Button’s team 20 to 25.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:SUCCESS FOR LADIES

To add to the success the Garfield ladies team won their divisionthree grand final last week.
The Garfield team defeated Yallourn by two shots in a very close finish.
The teams were: Rose Shaw, Joan Garvey, Joan Donovan and Margaret Charles. Eleanor Lee, Judy Prentice, Bev Sainsbery and Fay Carmichael. Lyn Oliver, Pat Marriott, Bill Charles and Maureen Lamport.
This makes Bill Charles a dual grandfinal winner.
