Quality down as market grows

There were approximately 175 export and 175 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange representing an increase of 60 head week on week.
The usual buying group was present but not all operating in the cheaper market in places.
Quality was very mixed with most cattle lacking finish.
A handful of vealers and yearling trade steers slipped 10 cents to 15 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold firm for most with the odd sale up to 10 cents easier.
Grown steers and bullocks eased four cents to six cents and a pen of heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold firm while a sprinkling of crossbreds eased 10 cents.
A handful of vealers suited to butchers sold from 270 cents to 310 cents and yearling trade steers made between 270 cents and 275 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold mostly between 255 cents and 276 cents and grown steers made from 248 cents to 275 cents while bullocks sold from 240 cents to 270 cents.
The heavy Friesian manufacturing steers made 263 cents with the crossbred portion between 228 cents and 257 cents.
