PLANS to bolster banking services in Bunyip have been boosted with Cardinia Shire Council pledging support for the project.
Residents campaigning to establish a community bank were told they could receive a $14,000 windfall for their bid to get a proper banking service in the town.
Councillors at their meeting last Monday agreed to seek a $7000 grant from the State Government for a feasibility study.
Cardinia Shire will provide matching funding if the state comes to the party.
Councillors said they wished Bunyip residents all the best.
“We have done this before, certainly it has been a great success at Lang Lang which is putting thousands of dollars back into the community,” Cr Doug Hamilton said.
Cr Graeme Legge said Cockatoo and Gembrook had also successfully opened their own banks in recent years.
Bunyip currently has a Commonwealth Bank branch and a Bendigo Bank agency that provides only limited services. The proposed community bank would be open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to noon on Saturdays.
