THE new Tynong war memorial hosted its first Anzac Day service last week.
The memorial was built by a huge community effort and officially dedicated on Remembrance Day last year.
More than 60 people attended the first service on Tuesday, 25 April.
Tynong Progress Association spokeswoman Carmel McMillan said it was pleasing to see such a large turnout.
Colin Teese from the Garfield/Bunyip RSL was master of ceremonies at the 11am service.
Local resident and Vietnam veteran John Ward was guest speaker and spoke of the sacrifice made during the wars and how so many men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice so that current generations enjoy the life we do.
Cardinia Shire Council councillor Bill Pearson welcomed and thanked everyone for attending.
Children from St Thomas Aquinas College performed a reading and helped in the singing of the national anthem.
Tynong’s Eugene Hams played the Last Post.
Several wreaths were laid at the memorial. Hayden Katta of Pakenham laid a wreath in memory of his great great uncles and grant grandfather.
A morning tea was held in the hall after the service.
