CASEY mayor Kevin Bradford has called on parents to stop their children running along behind garbage trucks.
The council is concerned about several incidents in which children were running and riding bikes behind the trucks.
Drivers are expressing concern about the risky practice and have, on occasions, had to stop their trucks until the children moved clear.
Cr Bradford said the large trucks with flashing lights could be a novelty for small children and said parents needed to take extra care to ensure children did not play on streets or nature strips when the garbage collection trucks were on their rounds.
“Collection trucks are large and heavy and, despite using reversing cameras, it can be difficult for drivers to see children or hear them above the sound of an operating vehicle,” he said.
“The safest option is to encourage children to play inside or in the back yard until the truck has finished collecting in your street.
“If children wish to watch the collection, we encourage parents to stand with their children and watch from a safe distance inside the property line.” Jim Mynard
