Golfers ‘race’ to the tees

AS Drouin Golf Course was closed for the picnic race meeting last Saturday many members took up the invitation to play at Trafalgar, Garfield or Warragul.

There were 111 who teed off in last Wednesday’s Stableford competition.
Ian Archer (handicap 5) won Agrade with an excellent 42 points on a countback from Mick Walker 42.
Mark Poulton was next in Agrade with 39, followed by Ivan Moffatt 38, Brett Dessent 38, John Wolswinkel 38, Rob Piner 38 and Shane Dwyer 38.
Mick Hanley (handicap 19) won Bgrade with 38 on a countback from runnerup Mike Waring 38 and Lester Smethurst 38.
Ron Nocentini (handicap 21) won Cgrade with a handicapbreaking 42 points, on a countback from Peter Johnson 42. Brian Kemp, Keith Andrew and Arch Lugton all with 38.
Nearest the pins fifth (pro pin): Benny Wyatt, 14th: Matt Long.
Balls down the line went to 38 and the CCR was 71.

Bruce Horskins won the senior ninehole event with 20 points from Doug Clark 19, Joe Coggins 18 and Gerry Tymensen 18.

This Saturday is a Stableford event.
Next Tuesday is proam day, some places in the field are vacant, but are filling fast.

Last Tuesday was the opening day for the 2007 season.
A nice break from the heat encouraged a good field of 44 players to contest a Stableford event on the Matthew Bennett Course. The CCR was 39 points.
Agrade winner with a score of 41 points was Robyn O’Brien and runnerup was Margaret Purcell with 38.
Bgrade winner was Margaret Mitchem with a score of 44 points and runnerup was Dagma Forbes with 39.
Cgrade winner was Anna Moffatt with 41 on a countback to runnerup Edna Cropley.
Nearest the pin on the fifth was Jill Brenchley and on the 19th was Margaret Purcell.
Di Sullivan won the propin.
Downtheline balls went to Olive Reid with 38, Ann Roberts 37 and Di Baskett also on 37.
There were four broken handicaps, Anna Moffatt, Robyn O’Brien, Margaret Mitchem and Edna Cropley.
A barbecue lunch was enjoyed after the game and Audrey Smethurst, the cooks Lester Smethurst, Barry Basket and Bill Todd and the ladies who supplied the salads were thanked for their efforts.
The Thursday ninehole seniors’ competition was won by Edna Cropley 21 points.
The runnersup were Poss Leeson and Marion Devlin, both on 20, and Helen Andreason, Heather Fitzpatrick, Betty Johnson and Ann Roberts all on 18.
This week is lady president’s day and will be a Stableford secretnine event, sponsored by Audrey Smethurst.
Next week is the Drouin and District Community Bank ProAm and will be a shotgun start.
Members are urged to enter, as this will be a great day with lots of good prizes and an excellent meal afterwards.
