Group reserves space at reservior

PLANS to transform the old Beaconsfield Reservoir into a nature conversation reserve were this week given a $50,000 boost from the State Government.
Members of the Cardinia Environment Coalition (CEC), which is leading moves to preserve the former water storage, were given further reason to celebrate at their annual general meeting on Monday when Environment Minister John Thwaites made the funding announcement.
Speaking in Beaconsfield at the meeting, Mr Thwaites said the funding was part of the Bracks Government’s commitment to preserving the area around the reservoir in its natural state.
“This area has significant natural values that should be preserved and it’s important the area remains in public ownership,” Mr Thwaites said.
The small reservoir at Beaconsfield is being decommissioned and will be reserved as the Beaconsfield Nature Conservation Reserve.
Mr Thwaites said the CEC would be formally appointed as the reserve’s committee of management.
He said the speed with which the process was happening, with the project only raised for the first time about 12 months ago, was a mark of respect for the CEC by the State Government.
The minister praised the work of Anthony Hooper, Julie Weatherhead and other CEC stalwarts for their vision and commitment to preserving the reserve.
Mr Hooper said Monday night’s celebration marked an exciting time for the CEC.
Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said the reserve would be a significant asset for the area.
About 200 people attended the CEC’s annual meeting, held at the Beaconsfield community complex.
