Stallholders beg for more as 2500 hit market

By Jim Mynard
MORE than 2500 people attended the Rotary Club of Berwick farmers’ market at the Old Cheese Factory, Berwick, on Saturday, 27 January.
Market manager Geoff Rankin said stallholders were completely overwhelmed with the community support to the first weekend CaseyBerwick Farmers’ Market at the Old Cheese Factory.
He said 31 fresh produce stallholders were blown away with the positive response from customers.
Many sold out of produce within the first two to three hours of the market opening.
“Some growers were able to arrange delivery of additional stock during the market,” he said.
Mr Rankin said stallholders planned to substantially increase stock for the February market and more stallholders had been appointed to extend the product range.
“This will include dairy cheese and venison,” he said.
“The Rotary Club of Berwick will provide additional food, such as egg and bacon rolls, to eat on the day.
“The Rotary club was particularly pleased to see so many families with young children at the market buying up big on fresh produce and generally enjoying the surrounds of the Old Cheese Factory with its playground, picnic areas and expanse of wellmanicured gardens.
“Growers said that with this site and continued community support, the market had the potential to be the best farmers’ market in Melbourne.
“Stallholders must have high quality produce and a product mix.
“The next farmers’ market at the Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick, will be on Saturday 24 February from 8am to 12.30pm.
