Togetherness is a golden moment

UPPER Beaconsfield golden couple Lyn and Ron Fisher recently celebrated a mighty achievement together – their 50th wedding anniversary.
“It’s pretty fantastic,” Lyn said. “You don’t look ahead that far when you get married.”
After doing a bit of research into her family history recently, in hindsight, the accomplishment may not be as surprising.
“I came across my greatgrandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary,” Lyn, a former kindergarten teacher, said. “So we’ve got a bit of a history of long marriages in the family.”
Ron, a former technical operator at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, was equally as chuffed.
“Not many people get that far,” he said. “The wonderful family we’ve got is our greatest achievement, though.”
The union has spawned six children, Kate, Richard, Andrew, Peter, David and Stephen, and 17 grandchildren.
It was love at first sight – at least on Ron’s side.
“I walked into a shop a couple down from mine and I saw this lovely girl and thought ‘oh’,” Ron said.
They met through mutual friends and the rest is history.
“Ron was very much like my father,” Lyn said. “A strong but wellcontained person.”
Lyn has fond memories of her wedding day, which was attended by 65 guests.
“When we got engaged, my father opened a savings account and put a pound a week away,” Lyn said.
It is an unusual memory that stands out, though.
“The fact my face got sore from smiling so much!” she said.
She also revealed the secret to the pair’s longevity.
“We work together and have similar interests and diverse interests,” Lyn said.
