FIREFIGHTERS saved a burning house at Garfield on Monday.
Tynong CFA captain John Glazzard said the blaze was mostly confined to the roof space of the house.
The couple living in the house were alerted to the fire, which the CFA believes began in the meter box, by their smoke alarm.
CFA units from Tynong, Bunyip, Nar Nar Goon and Longwarry helped fight the flames with between 20 and 25 firefighters responding to the call shortly before 6am.
Capt Glazzard said the fire was burning quite strongly when crews arrived but they were able to quell the blaze reasonably quickly.
Capt Glazzard said the incident emphasised the importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home.
