LEON Cook and Steven Bethune made light of the cold, wet conditions to win the foursomes championships at Drouin Golf Club on Saturday.
It was a return of the championships at Drouin with the poor weather reducing the field dramatically. However several pairs did complete their rounds including the big winners from the day, the pairing of Leon Cook and Steven Bethune.
They won both the handicap and scratch events with a fine score of 82 gross 8.5 73 1/2 nett.
Fatherandson combination John and Wayne Robbins also teamed well to come in as runnersup with 74 nett.
There was also an overflow Par event on Saturday.
Peter Blackwell (handicap 12) took a liking to the wet conditions coming in with the summerlike score of +6. This was a sixshot winning margin from the runnerup Greg Butler who finished square.
WEDNESDAY RESULTS
Sixtyone golfers competed in the Stableford competition, enough for just two grades.
Agrade winner was Mike Roberts (handicap 14) who won B grade with a fine 38 points from runnerup Shane Dwyer 34.
Mick Hanley (handicap 23) won B grade with 39 points from runnerup Phil Edwards 36.
Nearest to pins 14th: John Harris, 19th: Tony Elliot, 23rd: Shane Dwyer.
Balls down the line went to 33 on a countback and the CCR was 74.
THURSDAY RESULTS
Lester Smethurst and Jim McCormack tied in last Thursday’s senior ninehole competition with 17 points each.
Charlie Hardy, Greg Patterson, Richie Thomas and Barry Baskett all returned with 16.
Shirley Todd won the women’s section with 17 from Jill Brenchley 16.
COMING EVENTS
This Saturday is a twoperson aggregate Stableford event and members will also be competing for the Captain’s Trophy.
LADIES
Last Tuesday, 11 July the members rugged up against the cold and windy weather to contest a Stableford event on the Michael Scott Course. The CCR was 34 points.
It was also the final round of the Eileen Smith fourballbestball matchplay.
Shirley Todd and Robyn O’Brien battled it out with Jenni Harris and Mary Tymensen, the winners being Shirley and Robyn in a close finish.
President Bernace welcomed members and life member Eileen Smith who presented the winners and runnersup with their trophies. She was thanked for her continuing sponsorship of the event.
The winner of the day’s event was Jill Brenchley with 35 points and the runnerup was Margaret Purcell with 33 points.
Margaret scored nearest the pin on the 14th as well as the 19th and was just beaten on the propin by Jill Brenchley.
Downtheline balls went to Fay Downward and Ethel Manley, each with 32 points.
The ‘Silly Moo’ Award went to Jill Brenchley who, in a ‘senior moment’, entered in her Golf Link Card several times as number 105 with no result, before being told by Anthony that it was 015.
The Thursday ninehole senior’s competition was won by Shirley Todd with 17 points, runnerup was Jill Brenchley with 16 points.
This week is stroke, the Captain’s Trophy, with eight to qualify for matchplay.
Next week (25 July) a Stableford. Anticancer day.
