Bunyip paths

By Paul Dunlop
DANGEROUS footpaths at Bunyip will be ripped up and replaced under plans to make the streets safer for pedestrians.
Concern about the risks posed by uneven and patchworked pavement has prompted Cardinia Shire Council to endorse a $216,712 project to fix the problems. Bunyip Ward councillor Bill Pearson said the town’s footpaths were in an “appalling state”.
“They’re all up and down and been patched up for 30 years,” he said.
Council last week appointed contractors Sure Constructions Pty Ltd to undertake several streetscape works by the middle of the new year.
Upgraded footpaths, new street furniture and improved disability access are features of the works.
Cr Pearson welcomed council’s initiative, which he said would make a real difference.
He paid tribute to his Central Ward colleagues who allowed funds initially earmarked for works in their area to be diverted into the improvements.
“This will be really positive for Bunyip,” Cr Pearson said.
“It will give residents even footpaths to walk on, give the town a real spruce up and we won’t have elderly residents tripping over.”
Port Ward councillor Doug Hamilton said council had to ensure it kept improving and maintaining streetscapes in the shire’s smaller towns.
The Bunyip works are scheduled to begin in midApril and continue until June.
