BRUCE Horskins and Lester Smethurst combined well with a plus12 to win the day event and first qualifying round of the summer cup at Drouin Golf Club on Saturday.
The cup in a fourballbestball Par event and Saturday’s field consisted of 55 pairs who enjoyed the excellent playing conditions.
Following Bruce Horskins (15) and Lester Smethurst (21) were runnersup Mick Herman and Con Norris with +11.
The following pairs scored +10; Henk Otterspoor and Mike Waring, Doug Scott and Peter Phillips, Glenn Flowers and Tom Flowers, Les Goodwin and Ern Miller.
The top eight pairs after next week will qualify for the match play finals.
Nearest the pins – second: Glenn Flowers, fifth: Dean Robbins, 19th: Goran Danilov, 23rd (pro pin): Doug Scott.
Balls down the line went to +9 on a countback.

There were 104 players in the Stableford event and regular Garfield visitor Tony Elliott (13) won Agrade with 66 nett.
Runner up was Mark Poulton 68 on a countback from Jaydon Doyle.
Ryan Radford was next in Agrade with 69.
Peter Phillips (handicap 17) won Bgrade with 67. Runner up was Les Madden with 68 on a countback from Mick Hanley and Mike Waring.
Bill Baltruschaitis (24) won Cgrade with the day’s equal best score of 65. Jason Hannath matched Bill’s score, but unfortunately was relegated to the runnersup position on a countback.
Ray Cropley was next in Cgrade with 68, followed by John White 69.
Nearest the pins – second: Alan Manley, 19th: Lester Smethurst, 23rd (pro pin): Rex Amey.
Balls down the line went to 70 on a countback and the CCR was 70.

Jim McCormack won the men’s senior ninehole event with 21 Stableford points.
Con Norris and Lester Smethurst were next with 20 points each.
