Beacy bogged in Superules

ON A soggy ground at Heathmont, Beaconsfield’s Division 3 Superules side took on Eastern Districts, a team against which Beaconsfield had done well in the past.
In rain, wind and greasy conditions, the first quarter was played between back lines and in the conditions neither side was able to post a goal during the term.
However Eastern District had the advantage of the slope and Beaconsfield was happy to keep Eastern goalless and finish the quarter a point behind.
It took until the fourminute mark of the second quarter for Lamont to get Beaconsfield’s first goal, a kick off the ground.
The back line was under pressure to deny Eastern easy possessions.
Blight was having his best game of the year, not letting his opponent get easy kicks and clearing the ball for Beaconsfield time and again. Marsh, Burr and Hocking were also keeping their opponents in check, however Eastern managed two goals for the term.
Late in the quarter Low got loose at full forward and kicked Beaconsfield’s second goal. The sides went in with scores level at 2.4 at halftime.
In the third quarter Walsh played around the centre as a target for Beaconsfield, which worked well.
Cameron was getting most of the knockouts, which allowed Low and Valentine to run the ball into Beaconsfield’s forward line, but Beaconsfield could not keep the ball in long enough or deep enough to get goals on the board.
A costly errant kick from the back line led to a turnover, Eastern getting an easy goal and leading by 12 points at the last change.
Beaconsfield needed to kick long and directly in the last quarter, but a couple of minutes in heavy rain and hail arrived to make Beaconsfield’s job much harder. Eastern played the conditions a little better, getting a controversial goal and then a few minutes latter a lucky one from near the boundary.
While Beaconsfield had needed a win coach Valentine was not too disappointed with the result as the players had had given their all in heavy conditions.
Scores: Eastern Districts 6.8.44 d Beaconsfield 2.5.17.
Goals: Lamont, Low 1.
Best: Blight, Walsh, Cameron, Gubbins, Marsh.
