BEACONSFIELD’S pastplayers day last Saturday featured an address by former Hawthorn premiership player Ian Bremner.
Bremner spent 1965 and ’66 with Collingwood before crossing to the Hawks and becoming a key member of the 1971 and 1976 flagwinning teams.
He said highlights of his career was rubbing shoulders with greats like Ted Whitten, John Nichols and Alex Jesaulenko and listed stars such as Peter Hudson and Peter McKenna as former teammates.
He also rated former Magpie Phil Carman as one of the toughest players to ever pull on a pair of boots.
NARRE WARREN coach Paul Hamilton didn’t have much to smile about on the weekend, until he called training for Sunday morning after the weekend loss to Tooradin.
He sent his defeated troops on a fivekilometre run around Lysterfield Lake and then stood back as they entered the water for a ‘therapy session’.
“The most enjoyment I had for the whole weekend was watching them standing in Lysterfield Lake. I was standing there with a big smile on my face, while they were whinging and moaning about the cold water. I had three jumpers on and I was still freezing,” he chuckled.
JUST about everything that could go wrong at Berwick has this year and just to top it off comes the news that Devon Meadows has won the tender for the supply and sale of alcohol during this year’s CaseyCardinia finals series.
The Wickers expected to get the profitable job again, but were disappointed and it is believed that they have made that loudly known to league officials.

It has to be former Doveton, now Berwick, wingman Shannon Clarke.
He crossed to the Wickers as one of their gun recruits this year, but badly injured a shoulder and has since watched his new side disintegrate to wallow in ninth position, while the Doves remained undefeated on top of the ladder and are now firm flag favourites.

CRANBOURNE is believed to be close to signing a coach for 2006 to replace retiring mentor Darren Martello, while Beaconsfield is also on the search for a new leader after Leigh Clifford confirmed that he will not be a candidate for the job next year.
AND further rumour surrounding Cranbourne suggests that the result of the coming vote on a return to the old blueandgold Eagles strip is likely to be a resounding ‘yes’, after disappointment at the lack of promised support from AFL club Hawthorn.
One club source said that there had been no advantage gained by the change and even suggested that it had cost the club members with fewer embracing the new identity.
SPRAY of the week was awarded to Tooradin ruckman Danny Rout who let chairman of selectors Matt Shinners know about his displeasure at being asked to have a rest during the third term of Saturday’s game.
It was the big bloke’s best game of the year (acknowledged by both sides) and he was keen to stay on the park and enjoy it after copping a fair bit of stick from his former Hampton Park mates in the Seagulls’ loss the week before.
Apparently he explained that point succinctly upon his benching and consequently did not spend much time on the pine.
DEVON Meadows has a couple of interesting social events coming up.
Tonight will see Cold Chisel coverband ‘Gold Chisel’ play at the social rooms starting at 8pm (tickets $25), while ‘Joan King’ will conduct a night of clairvoyance on Wednesday, 17 August (tickets $25 with supper supplied).
Coach Craig Hunter will no doubt be keen to find out if his talented, but spasmodic, side is ever destined for glory.

THIS Saturday will see the grand final of the Mornington Region Colts under18 competition between Frankston YCW and the Frankston Dolphins, played at Lloyd Park Langwarrin, starting at 2pm.
The colts’ competition was designed to give under18 players who would not have otherwise played, due to too many players at certain clubs, a game of football and officials have branded it as a great success.
AND finally, any old Doveton boys who are at a loose end this Saturday, should make their way to the Robinson Reserve for a beer and a chat with their former team mates at the past players afternoon. The gathering will start after noon and drift on during the senior game which starts at 2pm.
