Reserved again for footy, cricket?

FOOTBALL and cricket matches could again be played at Pakenham’s PB Ronald reserve.
Cardinia Shire Council revealed this week it was looking to transform the reserve’s playing fieldcumpark into a home for junior sport.
Shire officers have been directed to draft a report detailing what it would take — and how much it would cost — to create an unfenced oval at the reserve as well as a cricket pitch and practice facilities.
The Don Jackson reserve in Ahern Road is marked for similar consideration.
Councillors are also poised to consider filling in or reducing the size of the lake beside the playground at the PB Ronald Reserve.
The surprise moves came at council’s meeting on Monday.
Councillors said residents and sporting clubs were crying out for improved facilities, particularly for underage competitions.
Central Ward councillor Kate Lempriere said she strongly supported the direction council was taking.
Mayor Bill Ronald read a letter to the meeting from Pakenham Cricket Club expressing concern about the lack of grounds available.
Shire officers are due to present their report to council in April.
A decision will follow soon afterwards.
The PB Ronald reserve was Pakenham’s main sporting arena for decades until the development of new improved facilities at the Toomuc Reserve on the Princes Highway.
A masterplan still under discussion designates the area for ‘passive recreation’ with plans for walking trails, picnic areas, further landscaping and an expanded children’s playground area.
