Icon to be remembered

By Jim Mynard
TOORADIN’S prized walkway across Sawtells Inlet will be named the Ron Mantel Boardwalk.
Casey Council decided immediately after learning of Mr Mantel’s death on Monday, 18 September that he be honoured in this way.
Mr Mantel served as Casey mayor in 2000 and put his heart and soul into the job.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith successfully asked that the council send a letter of condolence to Mr Mantel’s partner, Mandy, and to his sons.
He said Mr Mantel first served as a councillor on the Shire and City of Cranbourne, but later stood for the City of Casey after local government restructure.
“He was a man who talked straight and called a spade a spade, worked hard as a councillor and for the community, and was passionate about his area and the City of Casey.
“During his term as mayor he was asked to address an international conference.”
Balla Balla Ward councillor Colin Butler said Mr Mantel was an icon of Tooradin and had accomplished an enormous amount for the foreshore and sports club.
“Tooradin has been shocked by his death.
“He was devastated when he lost his seat on the council but was never vindictive about it and went on with life.
“If you look around Tooradin you will see so many things in which he was involved.
“Ron was looking forward to the next fishing season and was on his boat when he died.
“He died doing something that he loved.” Cr Butler said.
