Desert delivers plenty for Willis

BTX KTM junior rider Coby Willis powered his way to an emphatic victory at the 2006 Honda Hattah Desert Enduro near Mildura last weekend.
The 15yearold Willis pushed his KTM 250SXF hard from the start to establish an early lead in the 90minute race and never looked back.
Willis revelled in the damp and sandy conditions and completed 10 laps of the eightkilometre circuit, which later doubled as the prologue track for the senior Hattah Desert Enduro.
“This was the first time I’ve ever ridden a desert race. I got a good start but didn’t know what to expect. But I led from start to finish and loved it.
“I wasn’t sure how to set my bike up for sand and wasn’t sure how it would go but the sand didn’t bother it at all.
“It performed well all day.
“I ran a set of M402 tyres and they gave me plenty of traction and felt like they were in the right spot all the time. It was just a lot of fun.”
The BTX KTM rider’s progressive race results are a clear indication that he means business and could be a threat when joins the senior ranks of offroad racing next year.
“I turn 16 next month and I can’t wait to ride in the seniors. I want to ride Hattah next year for sure. I watched my older brother Jehi race on Sunday and the track looked good. It looks like lots of fun.”
