Slow start to New Year at Baw Baw Exchange

THE first sale for 2009 at Baw Baw Livestock Ex-change, Warragul, saw a smaller than expected yarding of 784 head.
Prices remained in balance with the last sale of 2008, bullocks only eased 1.5 cents to average 165.1 with a reasonable top of 173 cents.
Heifers topped at 179.6 to average 161.5 which was similar to last sale.
Only 90 steers were yarded which was half the yarding of previous sale, they made to a top of 183 cents, lighter condition and less demand saw the average price east seven cents to 161.8.
A larger yarding of vealers managed to rise nine cents on average to 177.6, well-bred and finished vealers saw brisk bidding amongst buyers.
On Thursday both bulls and cows saw prices ease, with bulls backing off 11 cents to 141 cents with 169.2 the top price, cows slipped 14 cents to 119.5. This was expected with a larger percentage of very light conditioned head amongst the yarding, top was 148 cents.
