FLOORBALL players at Cardinia LiFE had the opportunity to learn some new skills and game strategies from a national level coach last week.
At a three-day clinic, held during the school holidays, the Australian women’s floorball coach Juerg Kihm offered his tips and shared his experience.
Up to 19 people attended the different sessions over the three days to try and improve their skills and learn more about the fast-paced game.
Juerg Kihm, who has played floorball for about 25 years, said he hoped participants would take away some new ideas about the game.
“I have tried to teach them both individual and team tactics and different sets of play,” he said.
Floorball is a fast paced indoor sport that is similar to hockey, but also combines elements of handball and soccer.
It has five field players and one goalie on each team.
The main differences from hockey are that no physical contact is permitted, players can use both sides of the stick and the ball can be kicked forward onto the player’s stick.
Victorian women’s vice-president Bernie Snowden said she organised the clinic to help give the young players inspiration to aim for the 2012 World Championships.
“There has never been an under-19s Australian women’s team to compete at the world championships,” she said.
“I had all these girls and I wanted to give them something to aim for.”
A mixed social floorball competition will soon kick of at Cardinia LiFE on Thursday nights.
