Large yard hits quality

EXTRA competition assisted in a dearer outcome for most of the cattle sold at VLE Pakenham, in a yarding that improved by 50 per cent in number but fell in the quality penned.
There were some good quality cattle penned but most of these were heavy steers and heifers, some of which were supplementary fed.
The usual run of top quality cattle was not seen and the supply of good vealers was not available to purchase either.
This created strong demand for cattle weighing less than 400 kilograms liveweight, and some of the heavier cattle, which saw price averages come in two cents to six cents per kilogram dearer.
Because of the plainer condition seen in the yarding some prices average lower by as much as four cents per kilogram.
Prices for most of the 125 vealers penned were between 175 cents and 210 cents with the best quality on the day making to 226 cents per kilogram.
The best supplementary fed yearlings made to 220.2 cents providing they weighed less than 400 kilograms with some heavy and very heavy yearlings making from 180 cents to 188 cents per kilogram.
The balance of the 440 yearlings made anywhere between 140 cents and 175 cents with isolated sales of poor condition cattle even lower.
A reasonable selection of good quality heavy yearlings and grown steers and heifers sold well with prices being mostly firm to two cents per kilogram dearer.
Steers made from 162 cents to 180.2 cents, and heifers were between 134 cents and 162 cents per kilogram.
