MONASH University business students are looking to help out local businesses – for free.
The University’s 47 third year business students are required to complete a 20 or 40 day internship with a business to gain experience of life in the workforce.
Deputy head of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Berwick, Danny Khoury, said the internship program offered benefits to businesses and students.
“We do look at it as a two-way thing. Our students benefit and the host organisation gets a student with up-to-date knowledge,” he sad.
Community Projects officer Lesley Soan said businesses of any size, from home-based operations upwards, could participate in the program.
“The students can work on a project that maybe the business doesn’t have the time or staff to do themselves,” Ms Soan said.
Last year, in the first year of the program, one student investigated how a business could become a paperless office, and the business is now implementing his recommendations.
Another student investigated why two products had failed and presented the findings to other staff.
The students have majored in accounting, economics, management, marketing, tourism or international business.
All insurance costs are covered by Monash University and the placement can be continuous or intermittent.
