VLE buyers chase cheaper rates

SUPPLY increased, the quality was better, and the bubble burst with most cattle selling between four cents and 20 cents per kilogram cheaper at VLE Pakenham.
While a very small selection of cattle sold at rates that were very close to unchanged, this was only for a small selection of lighter weight vealers.
There were more vealers penned, and a good supply of supplementary fed yearlings were also sold.
There was a good quorum of buyers, but they all wanted cattle at cheaper rates, and they succeeded.
Better quality was seen throughout the larger penning of 260 vealers, and due to strong competition these sold at the lesser of any price falls.
The best quality B muscle vealers made from 190 cents to 225 cents per kilogram with some reasonably heavy vealers making the lower prices.
Other vealers made mostly between 161 cents and 195 cents per kilogram.
A return to the market of top quality supplementary fed yearlings did little to stir demand with B muscle steers and heifers making between 185 cents and 225 cents per kilogram. Demand varied greatly for the balance of the 500 yearlings penned with weight being an issue, as was the end use of the cattle.
Prices for a range of C muscle steers and heifers were from 148 cents to 175 cents per kilogram.
Cattle in secondary condition made from 135 cents to 158 cents, although a couple of isolated purchases of cattle by feedlots were very good to 178 cents per kilogram.
Approximately 100 head of grown cattle were sold, and the quality was generally good to very good.
However, demand was weaker here also, and the steer portion made between 152 cents and 174 cents per kilogram.
Prices for the heifer portion was not good with a range of 125 cents to 144 cents per kilogram paid for some well-finished heifers.
