Rains drive market dip

ANOTHER very wet week in most of Gippsland led to a fall in the supply of young cattle. However, the cattle that were penned were mostly in good condition with a number of top quality vealers being yarded. The competition was unchanged, but demand was weaker, and despite the good quality prices averaged two cents to six cents per kilogram lower.
Of the 220 vealers penned, all were of reasonable to good quality with a good supply of top quality calves penned. The top price for these B muscle vealers reached 223 cents, but most made between 186 cents and 200 cents per kilogram. Other C muscle vealers made between 155 cents and 190 cents per kilogram.
There were around 560 young cattle penned, and once again most were in good to very good condition. Some of these were supplementary fed steers and heifers that made between 186 cents and 221 cents, while grass-fattened yearlings made from 155 cents to 185 cents per kilogram for light and medium weight cattle. The best sale of heavier steers was noted at 182 cents per kilogram. Plainer shape D muscle cattle were still in quite good condition and made from 142 cents to 158 cents per kilogram.
A number of grown cattle were sold to reasonable competition. Because of the good quality prices were close to the previous week, which saw steers and bullocks make from 159 cents to 175 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers made from 135 cents to 151 cents per kilogram for most sales.
