WGCA District Divisions – Round 2

CLYDE shot to the top of the District Division ladder after overcoming Pakenham in a close encounter at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham.
Batting first, Clyde looked to be cruising at 2/101 before an inspirational spell of bowling from Jesse Hayhow saw the Cougars lose several quick wickets to be eventually dismissed for just 138 in the 35th over.
Hayhow finished with the excellent figures of 4/22 from seven overs, while for Clyde, Joel Avard and David Denton both scored 39 runs.
It was a similar story with the bat for Pakenham, with the Lions collapsing from 2/71 to be all out for just 106 in the 26th over.
Only Gavan Hughes and Ben Maroney reached double figures for the home side, with a dominating spell of bowling from Adrian Buller (5/14 from 6.3 overs) guiding the Cougars to victory.
Devon Meadows picked up its first victory of the season when it handed Nyora its second straight loss, leaving the Maroons lamenting at the bottom of the District ladder.
The Panthers batted steadily through their 45 overs with the bat, reaching 8/165 with Peter O’Brien (40 runs) and Lucas Carroll (37 runs) being the best of the batsmen.
Nick Fairbank again showed why he is one of the best bowlers in the competition, taking 3/19 from his nine overs.
With the bat, Nyora lost steady wickets throughout its innings to be eventually dismissed for just 97 in the 31st over.
Only Kelvin Toogood and Jake Hackett offered any resistance to the Panthers’ attack, each scoring 21 runs, while Bruce Watson was the pick of the Devon Meadows’ bowlers, taking 4/28 from his 5.4 overs. The matches of Emerald v Merinda Park and Kilcunda/Bass v Upper Beaconsfield were washed out.

Tooradin handed Gembrook its second straight loss of the season with a comprehensive victory at Tooradin Recreation Reserve.
Batting first, Gembrook was dismissed for just 55 after Michael Ralph (4/15 from 7.2 overs), Leigh Fankhauser (3/4 from four overs) and Ben Mantel (3/21 from nine overs) all bowled superbly for the Seagulls.
In response, Tooradin batted out its 45 overs for the loss of just six wickets, scoring 230 runs, with Ben Mantel backing up his good work with the ball by scoring 60 runs with the bat.
For Gembrook, both opening bowlers William Davis and Kidman Johnstone bowled well to take two wickets each.
Cranbourne Meadows scored a strong victory over Lang Lang after the Swamp Tigers were dismissed for just 72, before the Rebels reached 7/94 from 36 overs.
Shane White picked up five wickets for the Rebels to take his season tally to nine, while Rogan Fraser’s innings of 31 provided the only resistance for Lang Lang.
Cranbourne Meadows then passed the required score for the loss of just four wickets, with Ben Warren-Smith top-scoring for his side with 24 runs.
Both the matches Beaconsfield v Lyndhurst and St Francis Xavier Old Collegians v Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll were washed out.
