Chopper eyes fires

BUSHFIRE preparedness has gone to a new level, with electricity distributor SP AusNet using helicopters to inspect powerlines, powerpoles and pole-top hardware before the weather heats up.
SP AusNet spokesperson Natasha Whalley said the power company was using helicopters to prepare for the upcoming bushfire season in Beaconsfield and Pakenham.
“The inspections are part of our bushfire mitigation program, which includes vegetation and asset management,” she said.
“These aerial inspections are being carried out in addition to SP AusNet’s annual inspection program, which sees more than 65,000 powerpoles inspected each year to ensure a safe and reliable power supply.”
More than 20,000 powerpoles in eastern and north eastern Victoria will be inspected from the air as part of this program.
Aerial inspections are being carried out in Buchan and surrounding areas that are within 3km of state forests or plantations.
Ms Whalley said the helicopter was being flown at about 500 feet, with blades that would create as little noise impact as possible.
“Inspections are only being carried out from 8.30am to 4pm to further minimise disruption to residents,” she said.
“Photos taken by the helicopter will be examined by a technical specialist, after which an assessment will be made of the condition of the assets and appropriate action taken.”
SP AusNet is scheduled to complete its bushfire mitigation and vegetation work before the start of the declared bushfire season.
