Heifers firm as prices ease

THE fat cattle sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, last Wednesday saw 117 extra head yarded. Quality was very good, although demand remains easy, as prices for all categories other than heifers managed to ease slightly.
Bullocks sold strongly with a minor reduction on average of four cents. Prices for bullocks ranged from 131.2 to 161.2, showing quality was mostly even across the yarding.
Heifers rose 10 cents on average with a larger range between the easiest price to the higher, lighter price was 104.2 with the top 180 cents, 24 unweighed heifers sold for an average of $322 for restocking. Steers also sold to good demand and were quoted as equal or slightly under last week’s average.
Steer price range was 112 to 191.6.
Steers contained a yarding of 23 unweighed head, which also went to restockers for an average of $419.
Prices for vealers relaxed across the yard, heavy vealers ranged from 104.6 to 212.2 and light 71.6 to 205 cents.
Lighter cows on Thursday sold to better demand than recent weeks, as heavier cows tended to remain firm to easier, there were minor changes to the average price which eased two cents, heavy cows made from 70.6 to 140 cents and light 87.6 to 122.2.
Bulls eased as condition and weight were both back. Bulls made from 127.2 to 151.2 cents for an average of 137.8.
