THE new Bunning’s Warehouse Pakenham store has adopted a number of sustainable design initiatives to reduce its impact on the environment.
The store, which officially opens on Thursday, has installed a range of equipment to cut back energy consumption and reduce water usage.
To conserve energy use, the store has installed energy efficient in-store lighting that automatically dims when there is maximum natural daylight in the store.
This lighting system will reduce the store’s energy consumption by approximately 40 per cent.
The car park lighting and building façade lighting is also controlled by a timer switch that turns these lights off at a predetermined time.
To save on water, underground water tanks holding 40,000 litres have been installed on-site to collect water from the store roof.
This water is then used for in-store toilets and nursery irrigation.
Another 5,000 litre recycled water tank collects run-off from the nursery which is then re-used to irrigate the store’s surrounding landscape.
In the building process, capillary mats were fitted in the nursery to keep plants moist and reduce the need for watering.
