Kooweerup to see the lights

By Melissa Meehan
A $780,000 UPGRADE of Kooweerup’s busiest intersection gets underway next year thanks to new State Government funding.
The grant was allocated to install traffic lights at the junction of Rossiter Road and Station Street to speed up the increased amount of traffic through the town as a result of the Pakenham bypass.
Cardinia Shire councillor Stuart Halligan said the funding was vital to making things safer in Kooweerup.
“We have held concerns for the elderly and children heading to and from the pool a couple of times a day – especially during this time of the year,” he said.
“There are teachers putting themselves at risk to stop the traffic so that kids can get across the road.
“With this funding there will also be two pedestrian lights put in, which will reduce the danger for all involved.”
The announcement was well received at last week’s Kooweerup Township Committee meeting.
With the Kooweerup bypass campaign, Carols by Candlelight, Australia Day celebrations, the introduction of a commuter bus between Kooweerup and Pakenham and street upgrades, 2009 has been a successful year for Kooweerup’s Township Committee. Chairman Ray Brown highlighted the good work done by the committee over the past year at its annual general meeting last week.
