Drinks all round as market heats

THE Fat Cattle sale last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw an increase in the yarding of all categories, except heifers, where the numbers dropped off around 100 head.
Quality in all pens was good to very good with weights regarded as heavier than recent sales, with the heat having little effect at the moment, although this cannot be said for those present on sale day, where large amounts of cold drinks were consumed and no doubt more that night. Prices were effected by demand with all easing to varying but slight amounts.
One hundred and twenty seven bullocks eased two cents on average to 147.7 cents with prices from 120 to 158.2 cents. Fifty eight heifers remained steady with no change and ranged from 114.6 cents to 175.2 cents.
One hundred and sixteen steers containing a few very light quality head were most effected slipping three cents to 150.3 cents with prices starting at 57.6 cents and reaching 194.6 cents.
One hundred and ninety two vealers saw a rise in the top prices making to 208 cents this week, veal eased two cents on average with heavy veal making from 100 cents to 208 cents and light 115.2 cents to 192.2 cents.
There was virtually no movement in prices at the Thursday Bull and Cow sale where 386 cows were penned and sold to demand reminiscent of last week, an identical average price came from a yarding that contained both top quality fat cattle to some of very low condition.
Heavy cows ranged in value from 50 cents to 149.6 cents and the light cows from 85 cents to 105 cents. Ten bulls were sold with a minor reduction of one cent in average price. Bulls made from 128.6 cents to 148.6 cents.
Also on offer were several pens of very good quality bullocks which sold to high demand averaging 149.3 cents with prices ranging from 131.2 cents to 153.2 cents.
The draw for Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November: 1, SEJ; 2, Landmark; 3, Scotts; 4, Gibbon; 5, Elders.
