Evergreen’s grass is top brass

SOCCER superstars will grace turf produced by Pakenham company Evergreen Turf when Melbourne’s new Rectangular Stadium opens next year.
The stadium, currently being built on Edwin Flack Field in Melbourne’s Olympic Park precinct, will be new home of the elite Melbourne Victory and Storm soccer and rugby teams.
Evergreen Turf will provide about 14,000 metres of turf for the $268 million project.
Evergreen’s general manager, David Stoopman, said the company got the job based on its experience and reputation.
“We produced the same product for Skilled Stadium in Brisbane and WIN Stadium in Wollongong,” he said.
“It is a couch with a reinforced profile to improve its durability – the sand profile that it is grown in is the unique aspect.”
Melbourne Victory’s Evan Berger and the State Government’s Minister for Major Projects, Tim Pallas, visited the McGregor Road business last Monday to test out the new turf. Staff from Evergreen Turf also laid more than 11,000 square metres of turf on the Sydney Harbour Bridge last month for the first ‘breakfast on the bridge’ event (pictured).
About 6000 Sydney-siders enjoyed a morning picnic on the bridge before the turf was removed.
