Supply low, overall demand static

THE supply of cattle was smaller at VLE Pakenham after the cheaper rates of the previous week.
However, the fall in the number was only around 18 per cent, which did not assist in stronger demand. While some prices were higher, some were equally as much lower, and over the day, the averages came unchanged.
Some of the discrepancies in price trends was created by quality variations, as there were fewer top quality vealers penned.
There were about 320 vealers penned, which sold at unchanged rates, although price averages were up to three cents lower due to the lack of better quality vealers.
The top prices were 10 cents per kilogram less, but all of the very good quality B muscle calves made between 170 cents and 187.6 cents per kilogram.
Good quality C muscle vealers made from 142 cents to 175 cents with some sales of fatter 4 score calves down to 134 cents per kilogram.
Of the 600 yearlings penned, most were grass fattened, but some supplementary fed yearlings were sold. There was no gratification for grain feeding cattle as they only made up to 180 cents per kilograms.
Most yearling steers made between 142 cents and 168 cents per kilogram. Yearling heifers made to 165 cents with most sales of reasonable to good quality being from 135 cents to 158 cents per kilogram.
While there were some plainer shape D muscle yearlings penned, they were generally of reasonable to good quality, and made between 118 cents and 45 cents per kilogram.
Within the yarding was several pens of grown steers, being both very heavy yearlings and bullocks.
Prices for the 100 head sold were unchanged from 143 cents to 155 cents, while manufacturing steers and grown heifers made between 113 cents and 148 cents per kilogram.
A number of bulls were penned, and some of these were very good quality milk vealers and prices varied between 116 cents and 160 cents per kilogram.
The next store sale is Thursday 10 December commencing at 10am.
