BEACONHILLS College student Matthew De Bruin capped a successful fortnight for the school’s emerging athletes by winning the national title in the 90m hurdles over the weekend.
De Bruin, a student at the Valley Campus, won gold in the under-14 event at the Australian All-Schools Track and Field Championships in Hobart, while also finishing 11th in the triple jump.
He joined five schoolmates at the national championships, having progressed via strong performances in the Victorian All-Schools titles last month.
Mark Richards claimed silver in the under-15 2000m steeple event and Thomas Watson finished 20th in the under-16 division of the same event.
Meanwhile, young sprinter Rebecca Fredricksen finished fourth in the under-14 200m and seventh in the 100m, before combining with her Victorian team-mates to win silver in the 4x100m relay.
Jumps specialist Jordan Roberts followed up his Victorian title with an impressive equal-fourth in the under-18 high jump at national level, while Simon Prouse finished fifth in his heat of the under-16 800m.
Earlier in the week, Jackie Fredricksen – Rebecca’s younger sister – and Mikaela Davies returned from the School Sport Australian 12-and-under Track and Field Championships.
Davies won gold in the 200m for 12-year-olds and finished ninth in the 100m, while Fridricksen finished fifth in the 11-year-old 100m.
