Quality cattle make their mark again

A GOOD quality yarding was seen again this week at the fat cattle sale last Wednesday at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
A much welcome rise for heifers, steers and vealers with bullocks staying steady in price on last week.
One hundred and thirty four bullocks equating to twice last week’s yarding saw the price firm at 144 average, with a wide gap in range of 65 cents to 153 cents, although very few were at the lower end of the scale as the average price indicated.
One hundred and thirty six heifers were the movers lifting their average 10 cents to 139.2, again no light heifers were on offer with the yarding ranging from 114.6 to 178 cents.
One hundred and twenty steers of good quality containing several pen lots of store steers, sold to very strong demand and managed to rise two cents to 144.6, this week’s range for steers was 100 to 176.6.
Four hundred and four veal recorded a rise in average price, and also lifted the top price in comparison to last week.
Heavy veal made from 105 to 193.6 and light 77.2 to 209.2, with restockers chasing some of the light veal on offer, which resulted in higher prices in the light section.
A larger portion of quality beef cows lifted the competition on Thursday, which resulted in an increase on average for the yarding.
This week’s average price was 114.7.
Heavy cows saw the range start at 77.6 and rise to 132, with only one pen of light cows yarded this week, which sold for 85 cents per kilogram the lot.
