Quality cattle but prices slip

LAST week’s Fat Cattle market at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, contained 100 less head and with demand still easy, prices managed to slip across all categories.
Quality of the yarding was very good, with heavy bullocks attracting extra attention, with the top prices hovering around the 150-cent mark, the better end of the veal were also popular, but failed to attract the top prices expected.
This trend is expected to carry on until year’s end.
One hundred and forty nine bullocks eased six cents on average to range from 115.6 to 154.6.
One hundred and three heifers again held firm, easing only slightly to average 138.8 and ranged from 80.2 to 154.
Only 69 steers were offered and managed a six-cent back step as well, to range from 110 to 176 cents. Three hundred and thirty three vealers saw heavy head make from 79.2 to 185 and light 70 to 193.2 cents per kilo, to average six cents lighter at 152.9.
The easier prices carried over to the Thursday bull and cow sale, with bulls making a 121-cent average, which was four cents easier, 34 bulls made from 95 cents to 145 cents. Twenty seven bullocks sold to very strong demand on the day, ranging from 138 to 148 cents with an average price of 144.8.
Three hundred and forty six cows eased seven cents to 107.6 with light cows taking most of the loss, with more of the lighter condition cows yarded than recent sales, heavy cows range was 65 to 135 and light cows 70 to 129.2 cents.
