Racing bonanza for Katelyn

PAKENHAM’S Katelyn Penny has been announced as one of 10 inaugural recipients of Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) Eric and Jan Wilson Scholarship, which was recently announced at a formal presentation at Melbourne’s RACV Club.
The recipients, from across Victoria, were all young people who have a demonstrated interest in the state’s greyhound racing industry.
In recognition of a generous financial contribution from the late Jan and Eric Wilson, along with their son Craig and GRV, the scholarship provides successful applicants with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to strive towards short and long term aspirations within the industry.
For a period of 10 years, up to $20,000 will be provided in each year, to facilitate the scholarships. It is designed to meet educational and/or workplace training and/or remuneration opportunities.
The Minister for Racing, Denis Napthine, assisted Craig Wilson and chairman of the GRV Nick Caley with the presentations.
“Jan Wilson, supported by her husband Eric, was a much admired and loved leader of the Victorian and Australian greyhound industry,” Minister Napthine said. “This scholarship, encouraging and supporting young people in the industry, is a fitting way to recognise Jan’s work.”
Jan and Eric’s son, Craig, said: “Mum was very passionate about giving people the opportunity to better themselves and hopefully this scholarship will help people wanting to become a new steward, race caller, trainer, board member or even the next chief executive.”
“When GRV first announced this scholarship, it would be fair to say we didn’t know what to expect. However, the passion and drive of our young scholarship winners have been a revelation for us.
“It gives GRV great confidence in the future of the Victorian greyhound industry,” Mr Caley said.
