Price bounce back after break

IT HAS been two weeks since the last market at VLE Pakenham due to the public holiday, and the market has changed considerably in that period.
Consequently, prices for most cattle were two cents to seven cents per kilogram dearer, although some sales were noted at unchanged rates.
However, these cattle showed a drop in quality over the two-week period.
Demand was very strong from all quarters for a yarding that was very mixed in quality, weight and age with some cattle penned of plainer breeding.
There was 400 vealers penned of varying weight and quality, but all sold well with some of the lighter weight vealers selling to both processors and restockers.
Prices for the best quality B muscle vealers were between 240 cents and 266.2 cents with numerous of the C muscle vealers making from 225 cents to 245 cents per kilogram.
Supplementary fed yearlings topped the yearling cattle section of the sale where 725 head were sold.
These B muscle steers and heifers made to 259 cents, while plenty of other grass fattened yearlings made between 210 cents and 240 cents per kilogram.
Strong demand from feedlots and restockers assisted in this outcome with their purchases ranging mostly from 210 cents to 242 cents per kilogram.
Included in the yarding were a mixed number of 520 grown cattle.
Demand for all of these was very strong with the penning of over 400 steers and bullocks making mostly between 200 cents and 216.2 cents per kilogram.
The average was 207.5 cents or five cents per kilogram higher than two weeks ago.
Grown heifers made from 175 cents to 215 cents per kilogram for most sales with isolated sales of plainer quality heifers, and some cows between 162 cents and 172 cents per kilogram.
