THIRTY-SEVEN carers and care recipients were treated to a three-day holiday to Warrnambool last week.
The Thursday to Saturday trip, organised by mecwacare South East Regional services, was made possible through funding from the Victorian and Australian Government, under the Home and Community Care and National Respite for Carers programs.
The tour was run by staff from mecwacare and Pakenham tour company Tour Local.
It gave carers and care recipients an opportunity to enjoy a well-earned break from their normal day-to-day activities.
All involved very much appreciated and enjoyed the tour, including the mecwacare staff who felt privileged to be able to support the group and provide the opportunity for the break.
The trip took in a wide range of activities and sightseeing opportunities, taking in the spectacular view along the Great Ocean Road including the Twelve Apostles, the Otway Ranges, Tower Hill State Game Reserve and a tour at the oldest town in Australia – Port Fairy.
The busy schedule did not stop there with a range of events arranged for the evenings including a visit to Flagstaff Hill Sound and Light Show where the re-enactment of the Loch Ard shipwreck was thoroughly enjoyed.
The group took an alternative journey back taking the inland route through renowned farming towns and districts such as Colac.
A picnic lunch was enjoyed by all before heading to Queenscliff for the Seacat ferry, out of Queenscliff arriving in Sorrento and driving up the Mornington Peninsula to arrive back to Pakenham.
A number of friendships were formed and phone numbers exchanged by group members.
Comments such as “you gave me back my life as a carer, I now feel I matter” and “I have not been able to go on a holiday for over seven years and without mecwacare I would not have had this opportunity” were among some of the many, praising the work undertaken by the team.
Mecwacare offers an extensive social support program co-ordinated from Rivendell House including, centre based and community based groups, outings, craft and woodwork groups.
They welcome referrals of new participants into the programs.
