MOST kids have a different obsession every week, but Samual Ellis has been set on his hero for five years and is showing no signs of losing interest.
Scooby Doo, the crime solving cartoon dog, has a lot of fans but Samual has to be one of his biggest.
The 11-year-old from Cranbourne has spent almost half his life collecting everything Scooby Doo-related he can get his hands on.
Besides a huge pile of DVDs, he has a hammock full of Scooby toys, Scooby blankets and doonas, Scooby shampoo and conditioner and even a Scooby soap dispenser.
Samual is also the proud owner of a rare blue and white Scooby Doo that is no longer in production.
His favourite piece in his collection though, is a huge Scooby toy that would tower over a four-year-old.
Samual’s mother Nola supports his love of the TV dog and helps him save up for his next purchase.
‘Whenever he gets his pocket money he just wants to go out and buy more Scooby Doo stuff,’ she said.
‘The only problem is, I think he has every DVD they have made so there’s not much left to buy’.
When he was younger, Samual was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a common recessive genetic disease which affects the entire body and causes progressive disability.
So, when the Starlight foundation granted him a wish three years ago, all he wanted to do was meet Scooby Doo.
He was given a 10-day trip up to Queensland with his family. He spent an entire day at a theme park, hanging out with the Scooby Doo gang and going on the Scooby ride.
Samual said he was really excited to meet his hero and had one of the best days of his life.
“It was so much fun and I loved the ride,” he said.
“It was meant to be spooky but I wasn’t really scared at all.”
Samual’s favourite thing about Scooby, besides being so funny, is the Scooby snacks he is fed when he does the right thing.
Samual even has his own little Scooby Doo – a Maltese. His real life puppy gets snacks as well but this dog doesn’t need to solve crimes first.
