DEFENDING champion Leon Cook shot a 74 to lead the 138-strong field after the first round of the club championship at Drouin Golf Club – when last Saturday was also the April monthly medal and stroke day.
One stroke behind Cook is Danny Shine (75), Paul Duivenvoorden made 76 and Dave Ferguson and Harry Matthews both shot 79.
Duivenvoorden’s round was even more remarkable, considering he is off a 14 handicap and is eligible for the B Grade in the club championships, which he leads.
In other grades, Rob and John Piner, both 82, and Jason Stirzaker are close up in B Grade, and Graham Rawson, 86, leads C Grade, ahead of Doug Law and Michael Hall, both 89, Ron Nocentini and Stuart Low, both 90.
Barry Dyson and Sean Kelly, both 94, share the lead in D Grade, ahead of Rob Woodward 96 and David Banfield 97.
After his big day out, Duivenvoorden (14) returned with a nett 62 to take the monthly medal and A Grade. In doing so, he also took two strokes off his handicap.
The A Grade runner-up was Shine with 71 on a countback from Jason Stirzaker and Darryl Brain.
Graham Rawson (20) took out B Grade with a nett 66, ahead of Frank Clebney with 70 and Michael Hall and Stuart Low, both 71.
C Grade went to Simon Vigilante (21), with a nett 70, on a countback from Sean Kelly. Other good scores in C Grade were Barry Dyson and Neill Linklater, both on 72.
Balls down the line went to 72 on a countback. Nearest to pins were Jack Henning (14th), Rod Gardner (17th), Wayne Duckett (19th), Danny Shine (23rd, pro pin).
Eighty-eight players played a stableford round last Wednesday.
Darryl Bryce (14) won A Grade with 40 from Kevin Johnson 38. Ken Cooper (16) took out B Grade with 41, on a countback from John Paul Santo. Brendan Thomas (25) won C Grade with 41 from Jim Harper with 40. Saturday is the second round of the club championships and stroke.
