Larger yarding eases pressure on competition

A LARGER yarding of all categories this week saw a little pressure off competition at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul and along with an easing in quality this had a minor effect on prices, all be it very small.
One hundred and thirty bullocks with similar quality to last sale eased seven cents to 199.2, and the top was 217 only one cent less. Ninety-six heifers saw one cent off the average, but the lighter quality eased the per head price $44 to $909, heifers topped at 223.6.
One hundred and forty two steers contained heavier stock which saw the per head average rise $24 to $1021, but the average slipped three cents to 207.2, the top price was 10 cents easier at 230.Four hundred and two vealers rose two cents to 241.2, the lighter weights had little effect on demand, as the top price achieved was 272.2. Store calves sold open auction made to $598 per head.
Thursday also saw a larger yarding of both bulls and cows. Thirty eight bulls saw good gains rising four cents on average to 173.6. Good quality but lighter weights returned an average price per head of $957, the top bull price was 206.6.
Four hundred and twenty eight cows eased three cents on average to 156. The larger yarding of the light dairy cows was the main reason, quality was reasonable on the day with the top end above average and returned a price of 194.6, eight cents up on last week.
