Supply up before Easter

AS WE draw close to the long Easter break, supply at VLE Pakenham has increased as next week numbers should diminish. Along with the larger number, there was a downward change in quality, but having said that, there was still a number of very good quality penned in all classes.
The competition was unchanged, and demand was strong for the better quality, which saw most sell at unchanged rates.
However, some cattle were two cents to seven cents per kilogram cheaper with most of this due to the quality changes.
The top price seen of the 300 vealers sold was 269 cents with most making between 215 cents and 260 cents per kilogram liveweight.
Supplementary fed yearlings peaked at 268 cents per kilogram for two pens of top quality Limousin steers and heifers, while most of the 1100 head made from 200 cents to 245 cents per kilogram. Because the quality was plainer, several sales were noted between 185 cents and 215 cents per kilogram.
Feedlot competition was particularly strong, especially for steers over 400 kilograms liveweight. These made from 206 cents to 232 cents with most other cattle purchased to feed-on making 195 cents to 228 cents per kilogram.
Close to 500 grown steers were penned, and these also varied in quality, which affected averages by three cents per kilogram. The C muscle bullocks and steers of better quality made from 204 cents to 214.2 cents with secondary steers 190 cents to 205 cents per kilogram.
