Sons of Anzac on hallowed turf

DANDENONG Stingrays Lachie Whitfield, Todd Elton, Jason Pongracic and Matthew Buntine did well for an AIS/AFL academy team at the hallowed home of footy, the MCG, last Friday night.
The four were in a side where youth downed experience, with the Australian under-17 team beating Geelong’s VFL side by a point, 82 to 81.
In the match, a curtain-raiser to the Collingwood-Richmond clash, the Academy team fought back from a 20-point deficit at quarter-time to take the win by a point. The Australian Under-17 team held on to a slender three-point lead at three-quarter-time and held onto their advantage until the final siren.
Whitfield had 11 touches in the final term, with a match total of 29 possessions, in a best on ground performance, while Elton, Pongracic and Buntine were also impressive in the match.
The AIS/AFL Academy team departed for Europe on Saturday and play against an AFL Europe team in London on 23 April before attending the Anzac Day dawn service at Anzac Cove in Turkey.
