A RIPPING last quarter by Garfield saw the Stars crush Poowong by 51 points on Saturday.
Garfield looked in control when it led by 23 points at half-time, but in the third quarter Poowong came out with renewed vigour and posed a big threat when it reduced the deficit to only 10 points at the last break.
But the home side responded to the challenge and finished far stronger with six goals while keeping a tiring Poowong scoreless.
Garfield’s victory was built around frugal defence by Warragul recruit Damian Rhind and by Phil Burns who restricted Poowong linchpin Kael Bergles to only two goals.
Daniel Fry and Jim Bow, with three goals apiece, provided good targets up forward, and Ben and Ned Marsh and Dean Fitzgerald and another Warragul recruit Matt Runnalls mobilised the Stars midfield.
Poowong wingman Matt Cozzio and Ryan Dunn gave their side good service and in the absence of key forward Trevor Hooker (knee), Troy Aust was the best of the Magpie forwards.
Glen Attenborough and Dan Mullens powered the visitors’ midfield and Daniel Watson and Alex Rose put in a solid performance in defence.
