All go for art show

“THE Great Art Show” boasted the region’s best artwork last week, with over 450 paintings on show at St Margaret’s School in Berwick.
Joining with the South Eastern Arts Festival, the show awarded over $5000 in prize money to emerging artists to help them develop their artistic pursuits.
It was a competition for everyone, with local, interstate, and international artworks, and artists ranging from 6 to 60 years old.
Categories included two $1000 prizes for the best oil and watercolour paintings, best other medium, best painting of a local scene, best abstract, and a range of junior age categories.
Teacher Calvin Bell said one of the highlights was seeing so many people from different walks of life taking part.
“There was a 14-year-old boy all dressed up with a cloak and velvet hat who came with his grandma,” Mr Bell said.
“He’d saved up $25 and bought a painting by another young girl there. It was great to see stuff like that.”
The Great Art Show really highlighted the region’s love of art and Mr Bell noted the exciting prospect of future events becoming even bigger and better.
The South Eastern Arts Festival is on until the 22 May and features a music and arts program. For more information on other events at the festival, contact Mr Bell on 9704 7773.
