THERE was an increase of 300 head at VLE Pakenham, compared to the last sale two weeks ago, and there was a larger percentage of secondary cattle yarded.
This impacted on demand, and at times competition as a number of these cattle have slipped in their dressing percentages and meat yields.
However, demand was strong for a large number of the vealers penned with the best quality and some suiting feedlots and restockers selling at unchanged rates. All of the regular buyers were present, but the weaker demand and changing quality saw most sell between three cents and eight cents per kilogram cheaper.
The sale included 485 vealers of varying quality, and the best quality B muscle vealers made from 240 cents to 268 cents per kilogram with some being very heavy. The balance made mostly between 200 cents and 255 cents per kilogram.
Most of the 800 yearlings penned made from 195 cents to 225 cents with some very good quality supplementary fed steers to 263 cents per kilogram. But the larger number of D muscle yearlings sold from 175 cents to 210 cents per kilogram. Feedlots paid between 210 cents and 235 cents per kilogram for most purchases.
A reasonable percentage of the yarding were grown cattle, especially bullocks and grown steers. Softer demand saw C muscle bullocks make 195 cents to 207 cents with grown steers up to 215 cents per kilogram. A good number of manufacturing bullocks sold from 172 cents to 195 cents, and grown heifers fetched between 178 cents and 205 cents per kilogram.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 9 May is as follows: 1, Alex Scott; 2, SEJ; 3, Elders; 4, Everitt and Seeley; 5, Rodwells; 6, Mick Hornsby; 7, Landmark; 8, Nathan Gibbon.
