A LARGE fall in supply occurred after the way price trends finished the previous week with numbers down by more than 30 per cent at VLE Pakenham.
There was a lot of good to very good quality cattle in all classes but equally a reasonable supply of plain and poorly bred cattle were sold.
While all of the regular buyers were present, some are already full at the abattoirs, and made little or no bidding.
As this sale was the best of the previous week, price falls were significant. While a small number of seven cents to 12 cents lower, most were 15 cents to 28 cents per kilogram cheaper.
The penning of 400 vealers saw a number of very good quality make from 210 cents to 245 cents with isolated single sales to 265 cents per kilogram.
Some of the plainer types only achieved 170 cents to 205 cents per kilogram with feedlots and restockers buying some of these, and paying up to 220 cents per kilogram for their top price.
The offering of 350 yearlings were hit hard by the lack of competition, which saw the steer portion make from 175 cents to 215 cents for C muscle grades, and up to 229 cents per kilogram for supplementary fed steers.
Similar graded heifers made 180 cents to 211 cents per kilogram. Due to a number of plainer condition cattle being sold D muscle yearlings made between 152 cents to 192 cents per kilogram.
While grown cattle numbers were down there was still 320 head penned, most of which were bullocks.
These averaged 25 cents cheaper with prime C muscle bullocks making 166 cents to 183 cents, and only averaged 178 cents per kilogram.
Female cattle made anywhere between 140 cents and 188 cents per kilogram.
