SOME very mixed results came out of the smaller penning of young and grown cattle penned at VLE Pakenham, which was due mostly to competition, or the lack of it.
There was another feedlot buyer missing from the ranks and of the local wholesalers present, the demand was erratic and mostly weaker.
There were few good results in the trade cattle with some selling at unchanged rates, and an even smaller number sold at slightly dearer rates, but most of this was due to good quality.
The balance of the vealers and the medium to lighter weight yearlings were two cents to 10 cents per kilogram cheaper.
However, demand was better for heavier yearlings and grown cattle, and this saw prices improve two cents to seven cents per kilogram.
Of the 320 vealers penned, the best quality B muscle vealers made to 258 cents with most 225 cents to 245 cents, while the larger percentage of C muscle vealers made between 190 cents to 230 cents per kilogram. There were 300 yearlings penned, and the better quality C3 and C4 steers of heavier weights sold well making 185 cents to 220 cents per kilogram for most sales.
Other steers were between 170 cents and 195 cents, and most of the better quality heifers were from 182 cents to 210 cents per kilogram.
Due to the lack of feedlot competition some of the plainer condition yearlings only made between 150 cents and 188 cents per kilogram.
Over 200 grown steers were penned, and with demand being a little better, most made from 181 cents to 194 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing steers and grown heifers made from 145 cents to 185 cents per kilogram. There were 31 bulls sold, which varied greatly in weight. Vealer bulls made from 185 cents to 206 cents with others between 148 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
